AEW had Cody Rhodes in an EVP role, and he was an active on-screen talent. Then he left the company in surprising fashion, but he wasn’t a free agent for 50 days before his massive WrestleMania 38 return. A lot of fans wanted to know what he had to say, but WWE did not dictate those lines he delivered.

Cody Rhodes showed up on the April 4, 2022, episode of WWE RAW, and he had a lot to talk about. It turns out that he also had no script for that return promo.

While speaking on Flagrant, Cody Rhodes went into everything surrounding that first promo back in WWE. In a day and age where the show was typically scripted, he had a green light to speak his mind on the microphone.

“Everything about what I had done — my return to WWE — all of that was real. So, our industry is at its best when you’re just reflecting real, and that’s not always easy if you’re playing an astronaut or a crazy, out there, character, a Stardust for example, but when you’re telling them into existence. The first promo I did back on RAW, no one looked at it, not a single writer, nobody asked. They had a full trust in what I had to say — they said here’s your time, please hit this time — and I willed it into existence.”

Cody Rhodes’ story was that he saw his father, Dusty Rhodes, hold the WWE Championship, but he never got to take it anywhere. He wanted to carry the title for Dusty, and that was a story that fans could latch onto.

WrestleMania 40 saw Cody Rhodes finish his story, but his time in WWE is far from finished. He has a ton of things left to accomplish at this point, and it appears that he also has WWE’s full trust to take him there.

Although Cody Rhodes noted that he is prepared for the boos to return, right now his “white meat babyface” persona is winning over crowds. He is ready for whatever is in the future, especially if he is given the blank promo time on television to fill and only needs to connect with fans and hit his time.
