Legendary wrestling icon Stone Cold Steve Austin isn’t holding back about the painful realities of his career and what’s next for the Texas Rattlesnake.
During an appearance on the Bobbycast, Austin gave fans an unfiltered glimpse into the nagging knee issues that have haunted him for years. And in true Austin fashion, he kept it real—admitting that he’s not just looking at another surgery but a full knee replacement.
It all started back in Austin’s football days at North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas, where a devastating injury altered the course of his athletic dreams.
“That was my junior year (of college when I suffered a torn ACL). My first year at North Texas State University there in Denton, Texas. Running down on a kickoff coverage and I hit my guy; was supposed to block and man, I went down. I’d never felt anything like what I felt in my left knee, and I tore my ACL, but it was a mop-end tear where you tear it in the middle and the edges are kind of frayed. That’s why they call it a mop.”
Despite the severity of the tear, Austin revealed that doctors opted against repairing the ACL due to the strength of his surrounding muscles. “They can either repair it or not… Based on the strength of my quads and my hamstrings, they didn’t repair that knee.” This decision, Austin explained, has been a lingering issue throughout his wrestling career.
“I’ve had ACL, PCL put in there from cadaver ligaments several years ago. And you know, if I’m telling you like it is—and I will—I need a new left knee here pretty quick,” Austin shared.
Despite his knee issues, Austin still has one eye on the future, particularly the bright lights of WrestleMania 41, set to hit Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2025. Though nothing is official, the Rattlesnake teased the possibility of being involved—if everything lines up just right.
“They got such a stacked roster with so many great superstars these days… But if I got out there and be a part of it on one hand and do something positive that works for the company and works for what they want to do, and it satisfied a crowd, I’d be happy to.”
Whether it’s a match, a cameo, or just cracking open a cold one on the grandest stage, Austin’s presence would undoubtedly electrify WrestleMania fans. One thing is for sure—Steve Austin’s legacy isn’t slowing down, even if his left knee might be.
