Cody Rhodes may have finally “finished his story” at WrestleMania 40 by becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion, but an essential figure in his journey was noticeably absent from those final moments—his brother, Dustin Rhodes. While Cody’s victory solidifies his own legacy, Dustin, who remains active in AEW and Ring of Honor, has built an illustrious career that Cody believes deserves wrestling’s highest recognition.

In a recent interview with The Schmo, Cody reminisced about watching his older brother’s transformation into the iconic Goldust character, which debuted during the 1990s and became a unique part of WWE’s Attitude Era.

“I think I was 14 years old when Goldust was really hitting his stride on WWE television,” Cody shared. “I can certainly say that it was a unique thing to see. My friends had a lot of feelings about what Goldust was doing.”

Unlike many wrestlers of that era who leaned into their family legacies, Dustin Rhodes intentionally stepped away from the Rhodes name and carved his own path. Cody expressed admiration for his brother’s boldness and creative risk-taking.

“Knowing how much he had subverted expectations, knowing how much he didn’t want to just be a Rhodes, he wanted to be his own thing. I was very proud of Dustin throughout that whole run, what he did, and the lengths he went to do it,” Cody said.

During the mid-to-late 1990s, Goldust became a character that blurred the lines of traditional wrestling roles, embracing androgyny and playing mind games with his opponents. This fearless portrayal stood out even in an era known for pushing boundaries. For Cody, Dustin’s work as Goldust was an underrated gem of the Attitude Era, deserving of the same recognition that other trailblazing performers have received.

“Goldust was an underrated part of the Attitude Era, certainly somebody worthy of the Hall of Fame,” Cody stated, emphasizing his belief that Dustin’s work transcended expectations and left a lasting mark on the industry.

While Dustin Rhodes continues to compete in AEW and Ring of Honor, his influence on wrestling through the Goldust persona remains undeniable. As Cody forges his path as WWE’s top champion, his words stand as a heartfelt tribute to his brother’s legacy and a call for Goldust to receive the Hall of Fame induction many fans feel is long overdue.
