Dominik Mysterio has made a name for himself as one of WWE’s top heels due to his terrible actions toward others and his lack of respect for his luchador heritage. He has now explained why he feels he doesn’t need to wear a mask.
As is the custom for luchadors, they are to wear a mask, but Rey Mysterio’s son Dominik Mysterio didn’t do that when he started being an active in-ring competitor. In fact, Rey Mysterio even believed that Dominik could still end up wearing a mask in the future.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Dominik Mysterio was asked if there was any serious consideration for him to wear a mask in WWE. Mysterio confirmed there was serious consideration at one point.
Mysterio explained why he doesn’t wear a mask in WWE as he stated there was a time when it was suggested he could wrestle under a mask, mainly to follow the tradition of luchadores who wear masks to hide their identities. However, his situation was different because he was already on TV by the time he was eight years old. In fact, he has seen clips of himself from WCW when he was around three.
Since his face has been known for many years, it made sense for WWE not to put a mask on him. He had already appeared in backstage segments with his dad and had a storyline with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, so fans recognized him. Dominik joked that it wouldn’t have made sense to cover his face because he feels good about his looks. He also mentioned that wrestling with his whole face covered would have been uncomfortable and felt suffocating.
“I believe it was, mainly because I wanted to follow the tradition of classic luchadores, where you wear a mask to protect and hide your identity when you debut. However, my situation was very different since I was already on TV by the time I was eight years old. Honestly, even before that, I’ve seen clips of me getting tagged in matches from the WCW days when I was about three years old. My face has been out there for years.
So, I think it made sense when the decision came to not put a mask on me, since people already knew who I was. I had been doing those backstage vignettes with my deadbeat dad, and then there was the whole storyline with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, so my face was already recognized. It wouldn’t have made sense to cover up this beauty! Plus, I have to admit, I don’t think I would have done well with my whole face covered. I would have felt suffocated.”
Dominik Mysterio is currently focused on his on-screen romance with Liv Morgan as the two continue to dominate Monday Night RAW as one of its biggest attractions and that’s all that matters to him at the moment.
