Dominik Mysterio Didn’t Expect to be CM Punk’s First Opponent Back in WWE

Dominik Mysterio has established himself as one of WWE’s top heels over the past couple of years and it’s not really hard to see why. After all, whenever he speaks, fans instantly boo him without remorse. He was also CM Punk’s first opponent after Punk returned to WWE and Mysterio has now admitted that he didn’t expect that to ever happen.

Dominik Mysterio and CM Punk have only faced off in non-televised live events, including a match during the post-Christmas show at Madison Square Garden last year. Mysterio was chosen as Punk’s first opponent after The Second City Saint returned to WWE and it was definitely a big deal for the young star.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Dominik Mysterio admitted he was surprised by the selection, considering the wealth of talent on WWE’s Raw and SmackDown rosters, but he was deeply grateful for the opportunity.

Mysterio shared that he didn’t initially expect to be the one facing Punk, given the current lineup of WWE stars. The responsibility of being Punk’s first opponent after a decade away was both surprising and meaningful to him. He reflected on the moment he was informed, saying it felt special to have earned WWE’s confidence for such a high-profile match. When WWE approached him about facing Punk on the live events tour, he embraced the challenge and looked forward to the opportunity.

Yeah, kind of crazy. I didn’t expect it to be me, just because we have so much great talent right now, especially the roster we have today, Raw and SmackDown. But the fact that they trusted me to go in there with him on his first match back, like you said, after what, 10 years, I’m glad I was able to give him his first punch.

It was special because I knew the company trusted me with things like that. I wasn’t aware of it until I kind of got pulled aside and was like, ‘Hey, how do you feel about working CM Punk for the live events tour?’ And I was like, ‘Bring it on, let’s go.’

I was ready for it because I knew it was another opportunity and another challenge for me, so I was excited to cross another one off the list.

Dominik Mysterio already made it clear that he hopes to face off against CM Punk in the future as he hates The Second City Saint. Regardless, we will have to wait and see if Mysterio will ever get to square off against Punk again in the future, as fans would love to see that happen.
