WWE is in the crosshairs of another lawsuit, this time due to the decades-old ring boy scandal. Still, Vince and Linda McMahon have been targeted and this made headlines. Janel Grant also has her own legal battle with Vince McMahon, and her attorney has spoken out.
The new lawsuit filed on behalf of five survivors, known as “Ring Boys,” who allege they were sexually abused while working for WWE. The plaintiffs, identified as John Does, claim they were groomed and sexually abused by WWE ring crew boss and ring announcer Mel Phillips.
The lawsuit provides multiple examples suggesting that it was common knowledge among WWE personnel and talent that Phillips was engaging in the sexual abuse of the Ring Boys. These claims shed light on a culture of abuse that the plaintiffs argue was allowed to continue unchecked for years.
In addition to this new case, WWE and Vince McMahon are already facing a separate lawsuit filed by former employee Janel Grant, who has accused McMahon of sexual assault and trafficking. That case is currently paused due to an ongoing federal investigation into McMahon’s actions.
Grant’s attorney, Ann Callis, addressed the latest lawsuit with the following statement, via Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics.
“The allegations in the ‘ring boys’ lawsuit against WWE are deeply troubling. Vince McMahon made sexual abuse and human trafficking a hallmark of WWE’s culture for decades. Survivors like Janel Grant and other former WWE employees deserve their day in court. All former WWE employees who experienced sexual abuse and harassment should be allowed to tell the truth by having their non-disclosure agreements waived. Ms. Grant stands by all WWE survivors and believes that Mr. McMahon, WWE, and all involved parties must be held accountable.”
On October 8, representatives for Janel Grant formally requested that non-disclosure agreements related to her lawsuit against McMahon, WWE, and former executive John Laurinaitis be waived. If granted, the waiver could allow former and current WWE employees and contractors to come forward with their own allegations of abuse and harassment.
