Adam Cole’s ankle injury, which he suffered at AEW Grand Slam last year and involved fractures in three different areas, had a major impact on his wrestling career. Details regarding his injury were previously unknown but he has now revealed that he needed someone else’s bone during surgery after his ankle completely disintegrated.

Adam Cole’s ankle injury was simply a freak accident, as it turned out to be much more than initially anticipated. While speaking to The Takedown on SI, Adam Cole noted that he realized his ankle was seriously injured right away. However, it wasn’t until after his first surgery that he discovered how severe the damage really was. What was supposed to be a one-hour procedure ended up taking three times longer.

Cole learned that his ankle was in worse condition than expected, and he would need another surgery just a week later. This meant not only getting more screws placed in his ankle but also requiring someone else’s bone because part of his ankle had completely disintegrated.

During the second surgery, doctors opted for the cadaver bone instead of a metal plate, which can restrict movement. Cole expressed gratitude to the donor and their family, noting that this option is likely better for his recovery. He mentioned that he can feel a difference between his left ankle, which received the donor bone, and his right one, but he understands that this is part of the healing process.

“The first piece of news that I heard was, your ankle is way worse than we anticipated. You have to get another surgery in seven days. So, not only did I have to get double the amount of screws in my ankle, but also, I had to get someone else’s bone put into my ankle because the bone piece within my ankle just completely disintegrated.

Incredibly thankful to [the donor] and the family,” Cole said. “It’s certainly a better option. I definitely notice a difference in my left ankle as opposed to my right one, but I think that comes with the territory.”

Thankfully, during the WrestleDream pay-per-view, fans gave a thunderous pop as Adam Cole made a shocking return and since then, Adam Cole has been going after the Salt of the Earth. Fans can look forward to seeing Adam Cole on AEW television every week as he competes regularly again, something he hasn’t been able to do for a long time. Regardless of the challenges he faced, Cole is just thankful to return to doing what he loves most, and that’s what truly matters to him.
