Vince McMahon announced his retirement at the age of 77 in 2022 after facing hush-money allegations. After he stepped down, Triple H became the Head of Creative. When McMahon returned in 2023, he resumed control but later resigned again. McMahon also allegedly disliked NXT because it was created by Triple H and not by him.

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash, who is a close friend of Triple H, recently stated that Triple H would have quit if Vince McMahon had taken full control of creative again and not resigned.

While speaking on his Behind the Turnbuckle podcast, Jonathan Coachman, agreed that there could be truth to Nash’s comments. Coachman explained that Vince didn’t like how popular Triple H’s NXT project became because it wasn’t his idea. He pointed out that Vince didn’t push NXT stars because he didn’t want people to think Triple H was smarter than him. According to Coachman, Vince preferred to get credit for everything, even if it meant not letting others succeed.

“What did Vince hate the most when it came to Triple H? He hated something new that people liked; that wasn’t his idea. Vince hated something working that wasn’t his idea. Triple H came up with NXT. And you notice NXT stars would never be pushed. Now what do you see? What did you see tonight on Monday Night RAW? You’re seeing NXT stars all over the place. Yeah, that’s Triple H. That’s his baby. His best friend Shawn Michaels runs NXT. Vince hated that.

And that was one of the weak points of Vince McMahon. As much as he says, Tommy, ‘I did things that were good for business,’ if he came up with the idea should’ve been the complete sentence of that because he didn’t wanna give anybody credit, much less his son-in-law, so people would think potentially Triple H is smarter than him.”

Despite the changes in leadership, WWE’s business is thriving, largely due to Triple H’s creative direction and Vince McMahon’s departure. The same can be said for NXT under Shawn Michael’s vision and that’s all that truly matters at the moment.
