Following his WWE release last year, Shelton Benjamin waited for the right moment and made his AEW debut earlier this month and fans are already happy with his performance in the company. With that said, Mark Henry claimed that he told Toy Khan to sign Benjamin on the day of his WWE release.
On the October 16 episode of AEW Dynamite, Shelton Benjamin made his in-ring debut as he squared off against Lio Rush in singles competition. He had a strong showing and impressed fans in a big way and fans are happy with him already.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry claimed that he immediately reached out to Tony Khan after Shelton Benjamin’s release, urging him to bring Benjamin into AEW. Henry expressed his belief in Benjamin’s talent, saying he wanted to work with him in any capacity.
Although nothing came of his initial suggestion at the time, Henry is happy that AEW has since recognized Benjamin’s potential and signed him. He emphasized that Benjamin is a unique talent who should be treated as such, as it will benefit everyone involved in the long run.
“The first day that Shelton got let go, I went to Tony and I said, ‘Tony, you got to pick him in. Bring him in. Let me work with him. Anything. He’s the guy,'” Henry said. “Nothing happened. I’m glad that they’ve seen the error of their ways and they got him on board. Shelton is special, you’ve got to use him like he’s special. It’s only going to be good for everybody in the long run.”
Shelton Benjamin also revealed that he ultimately signed with AEW as he believes AEW is the biggest platform outside of WWE. Benjamin is now set to square off against Sammy Guevara on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, so it remains to be seen if he will be triumphant against The Spanish God, as he will be with AEW for the long run.
