The announcement that Monday Night RAW is moving to Netflix has created major discussion within the pro wrestling community. This shift to a streaming platform could bring significant changes to the show’s format and availability. Mark Shapiro has now revealed how the deal came together.
It was reported that WWE and Netflix confirmed their huge deal to move Monday Night RAW to the streaming service, which will begin in January 2025. The reported deal, valued at over $5 billion for a duration of ten years.
Mark Shapiro, speaking at Leaders Week London, discussed WWE’s pitch to Netflix. He emphasized that WWE aligns well with Netflix’s content, noting that it’s not live sports but scripted entertainment with a fictional narrative. The weekly, serialized format of WWE makes it appealing, as it has proven on Peacock to not only attract new subscribers but also retain them by reducing churn, thanks to its regular weekly programming that keeps fans engaged.
It’s up your alley. Why don’t you dip your toe in? It’s not really live sports. It’s scripted entertainment. It’s fictional. … It’s very serial in nature. It’s every single week. It’s shown on Peacock to not just be a huge driver for acquisition but incredible on the retention side of things, because it’s every single week, and therefore churn is reduced, at least given the WWE fans in universe.”
Triple H has expressed confidence that fans will smoothly transition to Netflix without any issues. However, the real test will come as we wait to see how the WWE product evolves after the move to the streaming platform in January next year.
