Anything can happen in the world of professional wrestling, especially in the current age of social media. While fake news has been prevalent for a long time, it appears a fake match graphic for AEW Dynamite this week has now made AEW genuinely interested in booking a match.
Konosuke Takeshita won the AEW International Championship at AEW WrestleDream and fans were happy about this fact. Ahead of the October 16th episode of AEW Dynamite, a fake graphic for an AEW International Title match between Konosuke Takeshita and Mascara Dorada created a stir on social media this week, with some fans actually believing the match would take place on Wednesday night’s Dynamite.
Since the graphic was fan-made, the match did not actually air from the SAP Center in San Jose, California. However, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the graphic has prompted AEW to consider running the match.
Meltzer stated that he initially thought the match was officially announced because the graphic looked so convincing. He attended the show expecting to see the match, only to find out afterwards that it had not happened. He then asked about Mascara Dorada, only to learn that the graphic was fake. Meltzer noted that the idea of the match was appealing to AEW, and they are interested in making it happen in the future.
“I saw on social media this thing that said Takeshita was wrestling Mascara Dorada on Dynamite tonight. It was a fake graphic but I did not know it was a fake graphic because it looked just like their graphic and I’m going like, ‘Oh my god, they’re announcing this match at the last minute.’ So I went to the show, didn’t know any better, and then the show’s over and it didn’t happen so I figured maybe something happened to Mascara Dorada, I don’t know. So I actually was asked and I go like, ‘What happened to Mascara Dorada?’ And they said, ‘That was a fake graphic, but what a great match. Boy, do we want to put that match on now,'” Meltzer said.
“So whoever made up this great match or this fake graphic, he spurred an idea in people’s heads and, in fact, they love the idea of that match. I don’t know if it’s going to happen anytime soon and Mascara Dorada as of now has not been able to work for AEW. I mean, they want him, they would like to have him.”
According to Luchablog, Mascara Dorada has not yet received a work visa for the United States, which has impacted several CMLL talents this year. While the match can’t currently happen in the U.S., there is a possibility that Konosuke Takeshita could defend the International Championship in CMLL.
