WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather was a true product of the Attitude Era since he was a full-blown pimp who had his own Ho Train and smoked cannabis, something that would never happen in this day and age. With that said, he has now revealed who came up with his gimmick in the first place.

The Godfather’s gimmick was such a gimmick that truly elevated him to the upper mid-card status in the company and it isn’t hard to see why. After all, that gimmick was unlike anything the pro wrestling world had seen before at the time.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, The Godfather revealed that his WWE gimmick was created by his wife. Although he initially intended to play a tough pimp, she recommended a different style for his character. Instead of acting like something he wasn’t, she encouraged him to embrace his true self—his fun-loving, high-energy personality. She believed that once people saw the genuine side of him, they would love the character. Following her advice, The Godfather leaned into this persona, which ultimately became a fan favorite.

“Yeah, I mean, I mean everything from— I didn’t… I wanted to wear only— I wanted to be a mean pimp, yeah. I wanted to be a mean one, and then she’s like, ‘No, let’s go this route.’ And she basically said, ‘Instead of trying to act like something you’re not, just go out there and be your high-ass, crazy, have-a-good-time self at this point in your life. Once people see that side of you, they’re going to love you because they’re going to see it’s genuine, and you’re just—you know—you gotta love The Godfather.’ And that’s why.”

The Godfather even signed a 5-year Legends deal with WWE back in 2023, so he will be part of the company for a long time now. Nonetheless, the WWE Hall of Famer will continue to be loved because of just how important his gimmick was back in the day, and that’s what he is more concerned about.
