WWE’s Bad Blood event took place at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, and fans were eager to see how the Hell in a Cell match would unfold. CM Punk and Drew McIntyre kicked off the show with an intense, violent match, the likes of which hadn’t been seen in WWE for years. In fact, a former AEW star put over the match in a big way recently.

The match happened because of the ongoing issues between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre from the Royal Rumble and was brutal from the start. Both wrestlers used weapons like steel steps, wrenches, and a toolbox to inflict pain on each other.

They were bleeding early on, with McIntyre constantly taunting Punk during the fight. The action was intense, and fans were very excited as both wrestlers went beyond their limits to pick up the win. In the end, CM Punk won by delivering a GTS to McIntyre, using a chain wrapped around his knee for added impact.

While speaking on the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy put over the Hell in a Cell match between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk, stating that it was storytelling at its best. He liked how they built their rivalry and how Punk suggested this might be his last big match. Hardy also pointed out the violence and drama, especially when a toolbox accidentally cut McIntyre. He acknowledged that wrestling carries risks, but he thought the match was simple and smartly done. It effectively showed the intense hatred between the two wrestlers and was strong in telling their story.

“I thought that match was storytelling at its best. It was very dramatic; they had both done an amazing job of building this rivalry. You get into Hell in a Cell, the fact that it was kind of advertised and Punk promoted it like it was means he didn’t have another Hell in a Cell left in him; he doesn’t know how much longer he can go. And I dig that. That’s something that — Jeff and I are doing something very similar to, ironically, going forward.

“But I thought it was done well. The way it was just a very vicious, violent battle. The blows with — even, you know, the toolbox. Once again, there was nothing dangerous in it, obviously. Just, the toolbox ended up being too hard and just split Drew open when it hit him. It just was what it was. One of those things with pro wrestling, everything about it is a risk, you know. And there’s a risk you can get hurt, banged up, or cut open hard way, and that’s what happened in this. But just the way they went back to the wrench. The thing like, where Drew was picking it up, and he was going to break the hold again when he put him in the Anaconda Vice. And Punk took it from and started stabbing him, and then we get into more false finishes out of it. I just think the drama was built so well, and it was just such a smartly worked match there. The way they put this match together was very intelligent. And it was very simplistic, it was very basic. But it was fundamentally so strong for what their overall story was about, how they just absolutely despise one another.”

It was reported that Drew McIntyre was banged up after the match and needed 16 stitches for a deep cut on his head. CM Punk dedicated the match to Chad Gilbert, which really moved fans. Nonetheless, the bout between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre will be remembered as one of the best Hell in a Cell matches in WWE history, and that’s what matters most.
