AEW is currently undergoing quite a few changes, which has been the case after the company recently landed a new deal with Warner Bros. Discovery and subsequently a deal with Fox Sports Mexico. In fact, AEW is now aiming to feature more Lucha matches because of the Fox Sports Mexico deal.
2024 is turning out to be a very good year for Tony Khan’s company. After all, AEW landed a multi-year media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is worth $555 million over three years and that is a very big deal. Even then, Tony Khan was not done expanding his empire.
As previously reported, AEW has also signed a multi-regional broadcast rights deal with Fox Sports Mexico. This long-term agreement means that Fox Sports Mexico will show all of AEW’s programming and special events, strengthening AEW’s presence in the Latin American market. The deal began at WrestleDream this week, as Hologram squared off against The Beast Mortos in a solid 2-out-of-3 falls match, which saw Hologram pick up the win and both competitors showed off their lucha skills in a big way.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that AEW plans to include more Lucha matches due to their new deal with Fox Sports Mexico. They want to regularly showcase exciting matches, like a two out of three falls match featuring Hologram and Mortos, to appeal to the Fox Sports Mexico audience.
“The deal is with the Fox Sports Mexico deal, they want to produce a good, like this two out of three falls match with Hologram and Mortos, they want to produce matches like this on a regular basis because of the Fox Sports Mexico audience.”
AEW is currently thriving as they work to expand their reach in different markets worldwide. Their agreement with Fox Sports Mexico is a solid step into the Mexican market. It will be interesting to see if this deal paves the way for more agreements in other regions around the globe.
