Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix have been big names in AEW since the company started in 2019 and their contributions can’t be undermined. Recently, rumors circulated that they had signed long-term deals with WWE, which got fans excited. However, those rumors have been debunked for now. Tony Khan would then Rey Fenix’s contract by adding injury time, and the reason behind this decision has now been revealed.
There had been speculation about Penta El Zero Miedo talking with WWE, with signs that he and Rey Fenix would only consider joining if they both got contracts. WWE was especially interested in Fenix, and Cory Hayes from PWN even hinted that WWE had deals ready for The Lucha Brothers, planning to introduce them on the main roster.
However, it was then confirmed that The Lucha Brothers are still under contract with AEW and can’t move to WWE at this time. It was previously reported that Rey Fenix might stay with AEW longer than expected, as Tony Khan had the option to extend his contract by adding injury time. Dave Meltzer reported that Tony Khan added injury time to Rey Fenix’s contract, which extended his stay by almost a year. Although Tony Khan made substantial offers for Fenix to stay with the company, he and his team have not agreed to a new contract yet.
According to Ibou from WrestlePurists during the WrestlePurists Dynamite and NXT review, Tony Khan learned what WWE had planned for the Lucha Bros on SmackDown, which played a role in his decision to extend Fenix’s contract. Khan was also concerned that if he let this situation go, other wrestlers might try to take advantage of him.
When asked if there was any tension with the Lucha Bros, Ibou explained that most people in AEW don’t have strong feelings about it, but Tony Khan has always liked and respected Rey Fenix. He just didn’t want this situation to lead to other talent taking advantage of him. It was noted that Penta has about a month left on his contract, while Fenix has 9-10 months remaining.
“People other than Tony Khan don’t have strong feelings on the situation. As for Tony, Tony likes Rey Fenix. He’s always liked and respected Rey Fenix. He just felt that if he let this thing slide that other people were going to start taking advantage of him and it was going to lead to a dam breaking. So they’re f*cked and Penta has another month I believe and Fenix has 9-10. Tony found out what the plan was for them on SmackDown by the way and that also informed this. Take a wild guess who leaked that one backstage in AEW.”
Rey Fenix recently seemed to say goodbye to AEW in a post, but it might have been too soon since he will be staying with the company for almost another year now. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see if Penta will stay with him or decide to go to WWE by himself once his contract expires.
