Def Rebel, WWE’s internal music group that has been creating the company’s music since 2019, has faced a lot of criticism recently. The negative feedback has gotten so big that Def Rebel has become a meme on social media. In fact, rumors of their exit from WWE have surfaced, and their status with the company has been revealed.
One frequent complaint about Def Rebel’s entrance themes is that they often start with a wrestler’s catchphrase or signature sound, then transition into music that fans find generic or unexciting. This lack of creativity has led to many spoof mixes on social media, where fans make fun of these themes to emphasize the criticism.
Def Rebel received a lot of negative feedback, especially during the Royal Rumble event. Critics pointed out that even Seth Rollins, who was watching but not competing, seemed unsure of which wrestler was coming to the ring because the entrance music sounded so similar.
WWE has been aware of Def Rebel’s criticism for a while now. In addition to that, PW Nexus noted that there have been “rumblings” about Def Rebel’s contract potentially not being renewed once it ends. While this hasn’t been confirmed, the report suggests WWE is exploring options to incorporate more outside artists alongside their in-house producers like Def Rebel.
“We’ve heard rumblings that Def Rebel will not have their contracts renewed when it ends. We’re trying to reach out to figure out when that is exactly and to add more confirmation to this. This is not set as fact yet, and until further confirmation, take it as a grain of salt. This adds to the report by Cory, where WWE is looking to utilize more outside artists more and more.”
While speaking on On the Backstage Pass show, during a Q&A session with WrestleVotes, WrestleVotes noted that rumors that WWE is dropping Def Rebel are accurate, but they will not be bringing back Jim Johnston. They mentioned that, while Def Rebel is out, Jim Johnston probably won’t return due to existing relationships and circumstances. It seems WWE will hire someone with more experience in-house, but it won’t be Jim Johnston.
“Yeah, as far as I know those rumours are true, Def Rebel will be out. Unfortunately, Jim Johnston likely not coming back just because of relationships and where they stand…I’d imagine in-house they’ll hire someone with more experience but no it won’t be Jim Johnston from everything I know.”
For now, Def Rebel remains involved in WWE’s music production, but that will likely be changing soon. Therefore, it remains to be seen who will end up replacing Def Rebel once they exit, as fans feel CFO$ should be brought back instead.
