AEW is going through quite a lot of changes, and that can call for people to shift out of the roster. Although Maria Kanellis’ addition made sense at the time, she has surgery looming, and her contract is also running up.

Maria Kanellis announced that she will be having surgery for a mass on her adrenal gland in September. Many fans have wondered about her status, and she provided an update today.

In a new Instagram update, Maria Kanellis provided fans with the latest regarding her upcoming surgery. She said that she will meet with her surgeon, and they have a few things to go over, one of which is whether they will “go in from the front or the back.” She has an ultrasound scheduled this week and other testing, as she is less than 20 days away from going under the knife.

Maria Kanellis also revealed that she still has not new deal with Tony Khan. Her current contract is up on October 31st. She has reached out to “see if they’re signing me, but I really haven’t heard anything.”

Although many fans may remember Maria Kanellis from her days in WWE, she has not appeared in WWE since 2019, when she, along with several other employees, was released due to budget cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic. After leaving WWE, Kanellis returned to Ring of Honor, introducing The Experience, a platform for fan engagement. However, she was released again on October 27, 2021, when ROH closed their doors.

Instead of going directly with Tony Khan, Maria Kanellis returned to TNA Wrestling at Hard To Kill 2022, attacking several wrestlers alongside Mike Bennett, Matt Taven, PCO, and Vincent. By October 2022, she and her associates departed from Impact Wrestling.

Maria Kanellis eventually made her AEW debut on October 14, 2022, alongside Bennett and Taven. In 2023, Kanellis shifted her focus to managing in ROH, but those days may be numbered for Maria in Tony Khan’s organization at this point if they can’t come to a new agreement.

We will have to see what Maria Kanellis does next in her career. Maria has also recently considered stepping away from pro wrestling. She certainly has a lot going on, and it’s anyone’s guess where she goes if Tony Khan doesn’t extend a new deal her way.
