Taz has devoted his life to pro wrestling, and everyone deserves a break from time to time. This week, the ECW original was written off AEW television during the October 2 AEW Dynamite, and there was a reason for this decision.
Taz was absent from Dynamite for their 5-year anniversary episode, with the storyline indicating that he was attacked in the parking lot and sustained a knee injury. Hook vowed to seek revenge for the attack. Although the identity of the attacker was not revealed, there were hints involving Christian and Hook.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the storyline about Taz being attacked and injured served as a cover, as he will be undergoing full knee replacement surgery. He has faced knee issues for years, and it has been noted that his mobility has declined, which he confirmed himself.
Taz’s wife reportedly encouraged him to address this issue. Nigel McGuinness filled in for Taz, working alongside Tony Schiavone and Excalibur on the show.
Additionally, the FTW Title was retired during AEW Grand Slam at Arthur Ashe Stadium, marking a significant moment as Hook returned the title to his father. This development appears to be unrelated to Taz’s current situation, as he has not concluded his time with the company; only his title has been retired.
We will have to see how long Taz will be off AEW television. Although he’s not wrestling anymore, just the act of traveling the country like he does has taken its toll on the pro wrestling legend.
