Joey Janela was once known as AEW’s resident bad boy but those days are long behind him as he is now a staple in GCW and other promotions. With that said, Joey Janela has made an interesting claim about an infamous spot on AEW Dynamite.
At AEW Fight For The Fallen 2021, Chris Jericho was pushed to his absolute limits as he faced off against Nick Gage in a No Rules match. To the surprise of no one, the deathmatch legend Nick Gage made sure the match was going to be an extremely brutal affair, full of glass panes, light tubes and pizza cutters.
In the end, Chris Jericho survived somehow and defeated Nick Gage, but it left Jericho concussed. Not only that, a Domino’s Pizza commercial aired right after Nick Gage used a pizza cutter on Jericho, which upset a lot of higher-ups.
Joey Janella took to Twitter and commented on the controversial pizza cutter moment. He stated it was entirely unplanned and caused frustration among several parties, including Domino’s, Tony Khan, and the network. After the incident, Janela was informed to ensure that no one from GCW ever discussed it publicly, whether on social media or commentary.
Janela found the situation confusing since he wasn’t involved in booking Nick Gage, feeling like he was unfairly associated with the fallout simply because of his connection to the wrestling scene. Despite his distance from the decision-making, he found himself wrapped up in the aftermath.
”This was 100% unplanned lmfaooo Dominos was pissed, Tony was pissed & network was pissed.
I was told “You never speak about this again, and you make sure everyone in GCW doesn’t ever bring this up on social media, commentary or whatever ever again”
I was like what the f*** does this have to do with me? I didn’t book Nick Gage, you wanted Nick Gage and you got Nick Gage. I was guilty by association lmfao.
The spot was 100% planned Nick Gage didn’t shoot with a pizza cutter. The timing of the commercial was 100% an unplanned coincidence.”
Regardless, that particular spit will always go down as a very infamous moment on AEW television and it’s not hard to see why, but many fans now feel Janela was needlessly included in the drama.
