CM Punk remains one of the biggest names in the history of WWE and he is forever associated with Living Colour’s ”Cult of Personality” song. When he returned to WWE, he came back with a remastered version of the song and the reason for that has been revealed.

CM Punk’s comeback at the Survivor Series Premium Live Event truly changed the course of WWE in a huge way, but fans noticed that he was using a remastered version of ”Cult of Personality,” which had been released shortly before his return at Survivor Series.

While speaking on the No-Contest podcast, CM Punk explained why he uses the remastered version of “Cult of Personality” in WWE after his return. He said he is close with Living Color, and they called him to discuss licensing the song again before his return last year. They told him that if the song wasn’t for him, they would not pursue it.

Punk didn’t want to say too much, so he hinted that the song was for him by suggesting they let it happen. The band’s lead vocalist Cory Glover asked Punk if the song was his, and Punk encouraged him to think about it. He also mentioned that they pay the band directly instead of the record label. The band re-recorded and remastered the song, which Punk thought was a smart decision. He felt better about sharing the remastered version with WWE.

“You know, I’m tight with the band. So, yeah, they’re calling me, going, ‘Hey, they’re trying to license the song again. If this isn’t for you, it’s a hard no.’ I didn’t want to say anything, so I kind of told him it was for me without saying it. I said, ‘Maybe you should just let it happen.’ And Cory [Glover] was like, ‘Is it you or is it not you?’ I said, ‘Cory, I think you should think about it, but what we did —yes, yes, yes—and that’s because we pay the band. We’re not paying the record label.’ Oh, okay, all right. They re-recorded it and remastered it. Smart. Yes. How quickly were they? I feel much better being like, ‘Here’s, you know, here you go [giving money gesture].

CM Punk also wanted the original version of ”Cult of Personality” over the WWE version during his first run in the company. Nonetheless, The Second City Saint is more than happy to be helping out Living Color in any way that he can and that’s what truly mattered to him.
