CM Punk’s arrival in AEW was met with great excitement, marking a hopeful new chapter in his impressive career. However, his time in AEW ended poorly, and it seems he believed he was done with wrestling after his firing from the promotion.

CM Punk’s debut in AEW in 2021 was a big moment, showing how important he was to the company. He won the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing in 2022, which was a significant achievement. However, his time as champion was short due to injuries, including a torn triceps he suffered during the “Brawl Out” fight at AEW All Out in 2022.

Punk returned in June 2023 and took on a major role on AEW Collision. Unfortunately, his time with AEW ended quickly after a fight with Jack Perry, which led to AEW terminating his contract. After leaving AEW, Punk surprised everyone by coming back to WWE at Survivor Series later that year.

While speaking on the No-Contest podcast, CM Punk was asked if he thought about moving on to other ventures following his AEW firing. The Second City Saint reflected on his leaving WWE in 2014 and pointed out that he needed to think about who would pay him and wasn’t going to go back to work for just $60, especially since he was married. Punk then admitted that he believed he was done with wrestling for good after AEW fired him.

“When I left WWE in 2014, people can argue very much so in bad faith that, ‘Oh he didn’t love the business because he didn’t go work the indies.’ What was I gonna do? It’s also the part of who’s gonna pay me? Oh yeah, like, go back and work for 60 bucks? I’m married now.

When I exited AEW, I did think ‘Okay, I was done.’ Because that happened in August or September.”

With that said, CM Punk wasn’t a fan of AEW airing the All In backstage footage and also revealed why he still supports AEW despite his controversial departure. Regardless, The Second City Saint is more than happy working in WWE right now and fans wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
