Few entrances were as unforgettable as The Godfather’s in the world of pro wrestling. Strolling to the ring with a crew of women he dubbed his “hoes,” The Godfather became a fan favorite during WWE’s Attitude Era. But what many fans didn’t know is how WWE was fielding calls from strip clubs every week to bring in fresh faces for his entrance.
During an interview during an Ad Free Shows Ask Me Anything session, The Godfather, whose real name is Charles Wright, shed light on the wild process. “When we first started it, Vince [McMahon] and WWE had nothing to really do with the creation of The Godfather. It was all me and my wife, but mostly my wife,” Wright revealed.
It all started on house shows where The Godfather and Bradshaw tested out the character. But once Vince McMahon caught wind of the gimmick, he was on board. Wright recalled Vince’s reaction.
“Vince heard about it when we got to TV and he’s like, ‘Charles, I hear this might have some legs to it. So you think you can get me some girls?’”
Wright, along with The Undertaker and The Harris Boys, made frequent trips to strip clubs to recruit women for the show. After the first few times, WWE began receiving calls from local clubs offering their dancers whenever the company came to town.
“It got to the point where strip clubs would call WWE and say, ‘Hey, you’re gonna be in town, we would like to use our girls,’” Wright shared.
The number of women he escorted to the ring varied depending on how much time he had for his segment. Wright explained that if he had more time, he’d be accompanied by a larger group of women; if it was a quick segment, he’d only have a couple. Regardless of how many women joined him, everyone got paid for their time.
To top it off, The Godfather even admitted to striking some interesting deals with the women: “I would vouch for girls in exchange for them bringing me good weed,” he said with a laugh.
It’s safe to say that The Godfather’s entrance was more than just a gimmick—it was a full production with strip clubs and a steady supply of “good weed” keeping things running smoothly.
