The Undertaker’s contributions to the pro wrestling world will never be forgotten as he put his body on the line for fans for three decades. He still keeps up with the modern pro wrestling product and has now criticized modern wrestlers for constantly using light tubes.
The use of foreign objects in wrestling has been important for many years. Tables, ladders, and chairs are often seen in no-disqualification matches in big promotions, but sometimes different weapons are used to match the type of match, like a shovel in a buried alive match or things related to the structure they are in.
As wrestling has changed over time, the types of weapons have also become more extreme. Wrestlers now use things like barbed wire, pizza cutters, and staple guns to make their matches more dramatic and intense.
While speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker talked about modern matches and criticized the use of light tubes. He mentioned that he doesn’t see any story behind those matches and said he wouldn’t take a hit like that in similar situations.
The Deadman mentioned seeing online clips of wrestlers getting hit with fluorescent bulbs in front of small crowds and questioned why that was happening. He pointed out that the small audience wouldn’t make enough money to justify such risks and emphasized that if he worked for WWE, the company would need to make it worth his time.
“I get stuff on my [social media] feed from people getting bashed with like, there will be eight fluorescent bulbs on a thing in front of 10 or 15 people and they’re doing all this over-the-top stuff. I don’t know what the story is. All I’m looking at is, all I’m seeing is, there’s not enough people in that audience to generate enough money to get me to take something that ridiculous. If I’m on the WWE payroll, they’re going to make it worth my while. Their mindset is probably well, ‘If somebody sees this.’”
The Undertaker also addressed having one more match after his retirement. Nonetheless, there will still be quite a few professional wrestlers who risk it all for the entertainment of fans, especially using light tubes during death matches and that’s unlikely to stop anytime soon.
