Shawn Michaels Backs CM Punk as Possible Successor in WWE NXT

Since CM Punk’s return to WWE, his presence at the Performance Center in Orlando has been undeniable. He’s been a consistent figure, providing guidance to NXT talents. Shawn Michaels, the man behind NXT, has expressed in various media appearances how much he enjoys having Punk around, and now, the idea of Punk stepping into a bigger role within the brand has been floated.

During a recent interview on The Ringer Wrestling Show, Michaels was asked about the possibility of CM Punk becoming his successor at NXT. In a move that could signal a major shift for the brand, Michaels said he fully supports the idea—if it’s what Punk wants after his in-ring career.

“So, if that is in his heart to do, absolutely,” Michaels said about CM Punk potentially being his successor at NXT. “And again, I will say whether it’s CM Punk or anyone that has a passion for that, I would absolutely understand it because it happened to me. This place is infectious.”

Michaels further emphasized how the environment at NXT and the Performance Center is unique, creating a culture that many in the business gravitate toward. He spoke of how his own transition from an in-ring performer to helping future stars gave him a newfound joy, and he sees similar qualities in Punk.

“CM Punk obviously seems to be somebody that enjoys that as well. So, I will say this as I’ve said on many occasions: When he’s ready to make that move after his in-ring career, I’ll support him every step of the way and help in any way that I can.”

Michaels even joked about how many have tried to “kick him out of the door” before, but he’s still here—and he’s ready to pass the torch when the time comes.

NXT’s Future: Touring, Growth, and Staying True to Its Roots

The conversation also turned to NXT’s future as a brand. Michaels was asked about the possibility of NXT evolving into a full-fledged third touring brand alongside WWE’s mainstays, Raw and SmackDown. While he sees potential for NXT to go on the road more often, he believes the brand’s uniqueness lies in its current setup.

“I sort of look at NXT as the NCAA, to the NFL. If Raw and SmackDown are the NFL, NXT to me is the NCAA,” Michaels said. He explained that much like college football fills stadiums, NXT has the ability to draw big crowds, but he wants to keep that special.

“I personally would like to keep that special. I never wanna venture too far from our home here in Florida. That’s one of the things that makes us different.”

Michaels emphasized the importance of maintaining NXT’s intimate and innovative environment at the Performance Center. While there are opportunities to grow and take NXT on the road more regularly, he wants to preserve the brand’s Florida roots and keep its foundation strong.

With NXT’s first show on the CW Network set for October 1st, the excitement surrounding the brand continues to grow. The future of NXT looks promising, especially with the potential of CM Punk taking on a bigger role in the development of WWE’s future stars.
