The Netflix docuseries Mr. McMahon drew in many WWE fans, with many binge-watching the six-part series. However, viewers were left disappointed by the lack of major revelations throughout the program. Notably, several key figures in Vince McMahon’s story, such as Janel Grant and Rita Chatterton, were absent from the series.
David Shoemaker played a prominent role in the production. He helped bring in major names for the series, including Triple H, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan, Shane McMahon, and Bruce Prichard. He was around for the making of the series, and hindsight is always 20/20.
On the latest episode of The Ringer Wrestling Show, David Shoemaker was asked to share some individuals he wished could have participated in the documentary. He admitted that having Jim Ross, Jerry Brisco and Rita Chatterton around would have helped fill out the story.
“There are some people who, obviously, they were on the first list that didn’t get in because the lineup was so stacked. There were parts where guys like Jim Ross, Jerry Brisco, who worked so closely with Vince for so long. Would’ve loved to talk to them. Obviously, we reached out to Janel Grant and her attorneys. Some other people. There were rumors and stuff about Rita Chatterton. That would have been ideal, to be able to talk to everybody there. We were racing against the clock a little bit. There were some people we would’ve wanted to interview who passed away before we could get to them. That’s what you have to deal with.”
David Shoemaker went on to express his regret about missing out on certain legendary figures. “I would’ve loved to get Dusty Rhodes on tape to back up the story about Vince offering him the Hulk Hogan spot. Would’ve loved to talk to other old timers, Gorilla Monsoon and those guys. Everybody that was there at the beginning, except Linda and Vince, is gone.”
While the docuseries offered plenty of insight from key players, it’s clear that time constraints and missed opportunities left out a fuller exploration of McMahon’s complex legacy. The fact that Vince McMahon’s hush money scandal and Janel Grant’s lawsuit dropped near the end of production also took things into a brand-new direction.
