WWE Hall of Famer ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin is one of the most iconic names in the history of professional wrestling, but he hasn’t always gotten along well with every pro wrestler. In fact, a former WWE star claims that they suffered a major financial loss after Steve Austin walked out on their match.
In his prime, Steve Austin acted like a true professional and was part of some of WWE’s biggest feuds. However, there was one occasion when he refused to show up for a match.
While speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s The Coach & Bro Show, ex-WWE star Jonathan Coachman talked about how Austin walked out on him. Coachman explained that there was a storyline where Vince McMahon wanted him to face Austin at a pay-per-view because he was popular as a heel.
“We had a storyline where Vince [McMahon] wanted me because I was over as a heel. I don’t care what anybody says. And a lot of the boys hated that because I was still the guy that came in as an announcer that they turned into a character. And so Vince wanted me to face Stone Cold for a pay-per-view.”
Despite having a good relationship with Austin, Coachman revealed that Austin felt it was beneath him to wrestle him, which cost Coachman a significant amount of money. He mentioned that he could have earned an extra $15,000 to $25,000 for that match, but it never happened because Austin didn’t show up.
“Stone Cold, who I get along with great, no issues at all, decided it was beneath him to wrestle me. So he just didn’t show up. So back then, you would get bonuses, and probably for that match, I would have made 15 to 25 grand extra, and then I didn’t get that match.”
Steve Austin was also once worried that fans wouldn’t remember him during his 2019 return. Regardless, Steve Austin did what he felt was right for his career, even at the expense of Jonathan Coachman and there was nothing that would have changed that.
