Swerve Strickland has been making waves in AEW with his impressive skills and presence. Despite signing a new deal with AEW, reports suggest WWE sees his contract as a negative for their business. This prompted a sharp response from Strickland and now Booker T has called out Strickland for his comments, adding to the ongoing conversation.
Swerve Strickland talked about the recent reaction to his AEW contract during an interview on The Breakfast Club. He believes WWE was upset because of his new deal, pointing out that they tend to raise concerns when a black wrestler gets a big contract. Strickland believes that if WWE isn’t interested in him anymore, they shouldn’t worry about his contract or how much he’s making. He made it clear that he’s moved on from his time with WWE and is now focused on growing his career in AEW.
“They only complain when a black person gets paid, I will say that,” Strickland said. “That’s what, once again, we shake the foundation and things like that, because it’s like, ‘Oh snap, wait,’ and ‘It’s not what we would pay.’ I’m like, ‘Then why are you calling me? Why you asking me?’ Like if I’m not your concern, don’t worry about it, don’t worry about my pockets and our money, we’re good. You have got your talent.. Like you made your decision with me two years ago, no hard feelings from me, boom, I keep it moving, I’m going to figure my way out and I’m going to build myself up.”
Booker T responded to Swerve Strickland’s comments about race by disagreeing with Strickland’s claims. While speaking on his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T pointed out that WWE has many successful black wrestlers in high-paid positions.
Booker T mentioned stars like Bianca Belair, The New Day, and Oba Femi as examples, highlighting their achievements in WWE. Booker T seemed unsure of what Strickland was referring to, considering the success of these wrestlers.
“I look at the black talent in WWE right now — you know, Bianca Belair, Oba Femi… The New Day have won more Tag Team Championships than anybody. Bianca has headlined at WrestleMania. Oba Femi is a young guy out of college who’s doing big things in NXT. I’m just trying to figure out what he’s talking about”
Some still believe that Swerve Strickland should have passed on his new AEW deal and went to WWE instead. Regardless, Strickland simply spoke his mind on the matter and he had a right to express his opinion, even if many people disagrees with him, especially Booker T.
