It’s been six months since Sting’s epic retirement match at AEW Revolution, where he teamed up with Darby Allin to defeat The Young Bucks and retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships. Since then, the legendary icon made a surprise return at All In to save Darby from an attack by The Elite.

Appearing on Superstar Crossover, Darby Allin shared behind-the-scenes details about Sting’s final match and revealed that some wild ideas, including the use of fire, were thrown around to make the bout even more memorable.

“That was my sole idea (using glass during Sting’s final match),” Allin explained. “I think that I was like, ‘Man, this is Sting’s last match. You only get one shot at this. We have to go balls to the wall, all-out crazy. What can we do?’”

While the glass was ultimately used in the match, Allin noted that there was even talk about incorporating fire.

“There were ideas of fire, but… I think the glass was pretty much — there’s no way of faking glass. Unless you use sugar glass, but I ain’t gonna play with that. Give me the good stuff.”

Allin reflected on his approach to wrestling, emphasizing his commitment to authenticity.

“Everything I do in wrestling, there’s no holes through it. You can’t see through it. Me getting thrown down a flight of steps at Daily’s Place by Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky — that sucked. That’s cement stairs. But I don’t want anyone to just say, ‘Ah, there was padding.’ Nah. No.”

In his most recent AEW appearance, Darby Allin faced Jon Moxley in the main event of Dynamite Grand Slam, losing his AEW World Title shot to Moxley. With this win, Moxley is now set to challenge Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Championship at WrestleDream.

As Darby Allin looks back on Sting’s unforgettable retirement match, fans are left wondering what could have been had the wilder ideas like fire made it into the bout. With Allin continuing to push boundaries, what’s next for the daredevil in AEW?

Do you think using fire in Sting’s retirement match would have been a good idea, or did the match have enough intensity without it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
