Cody Rhodes, “The American Nightmare,” recently opened up during a Good Karma Wrestling interview about the significance of the iconic line from his entrance theme, “Wrestling has more than one royal family.”

The lyric has become a fan-favorite, and Rhodes explained that it holds a deeper, more personal meaning, especially given his family’s history in the wrestling industry. When asked if he could think of a storyline in wrestling as real as his, Cody compared his story to Game of Thrones, noting that it’s rooted in reality and spans decades.

“You see a lot of rehashes that are tributes and sometimes you can take something that is old and it be new again,” Rhodes said. “For me, I feel my story is unique because it’s rooted in full reality and it existed prior to. It’s a very long form going from 1977-78 with Dusty and Superstar [Billy Graham], and the WWWF Championship. It’s a very long tale that is incredibly real in a world where we suspended disbelief.”

He also pointed out that the line from his theme song has taken on an unintended significance, especially with his ongoing feud with The Bloodline.

“The bit at the top of my song, ‘Wrestling has more than one royal family.’ I don’t think it was ever intended to be as real as it is. I mean that in a positive for me, but also the crosshair I have on my back from The Bloodline. Any of these families. I’m not QB 1, I’m enemy one. It feels very much that it’s become as real as it ever could. I can’t think of anything that compares.”

Rhodes also emphasized the importance of authenticity in his character and storytelling. Drawing advice from his friend, actor Stephen Amell.

“That element of authenticity… I’ll know the moment I’m disingenuous. There have been plenty of times when I’ve said something that was off the path. That’s the number one thing: staying on brand for me is staying authentic.”

As Cody Rhodes continues to carve out his own legacy in wrestling, the authenticity of his journey remains at the heart of his appeal to fans worldwide. The significance of the line from his theme song has only grown as he battles The Bloodline, reminding everyone that wrestling truly has more than one royal family.
