WWE fans have witnessed several key storylines in 2024, but one that has captured significant attention involves Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio working together against Rhea Ripley. This storyline has continued, leading to a high-profile match at Bad Blood 2024, where a shark cage stipulation is in place. However, Ripley’s real-life husband, AEW star Buddy Matthews, has been unable to get involved due to his commitments with AEW.
Buddy Matthews recently addressed the possibility of joining the storyline involving Ripley and Mysterio. Fans have long speculated about Matthews entering the WWE storyline, especially as tensions between Ripley and Mysterio escalated following Mysterio’s betrayal at SummerSlam 2024. A match between Matthews and Mysterio could easily be set up if they were both in the same promotion.
During a virtual signing with K&S Wrestlefest, Buddy Matthews discussed the potential for a storyline between himself, Ripley, and Mysterio. He acknowledged the fan interest and shared his thoughts on what could happen if the opportunity arose.
“Oh, 100 percent (there’s potential for an angle with myself, Rhea Ripley & Dominik Mysterio)… And we’ve fantasy-booked, and I’ve thrown ideas at her. She’s like, ‘That would be so cool.’”
The former Buddy Murphy also reflected on his history with Dominik Mysterio and the Mysterio family, highlighting his involvement in Dominik’s early WWE matches and his previous romantic storyline with Dominik’s sister, Aalyah. That was a storyline that they dropped in quick fashion.
Buddy Matthews continued by saying, “Long-term storytelling is there if we wanted to go back and do it, and the footage is there, so whether it is a relationship-form or just insert — there’s ways of doing it.”
The concept of breaking down the traditional barriers between promotions, or “forbidden doors,” has become more common in the wrestling world. Matthews alluded to this possibility, stating, “Maybe there’s a forbidden door that’s unknown and may open up eventually. Who knows? But, all we can do is play cards that we have in front of us now.”
As the storyline between Ripley and Mysterio continues in WWE, Ripley is set to challenge Liv Morgan for the WWE Women’s World Championship at Bad Blood 2024. In a twist, Dominik Mysterio will be suspended above the ring in a shark cage during the match, adding another layer to the ongoing drama.
