Penta El Zero Miedo, a key figure in the Lucha Brothers tag team alongside Rey Fenix, has been a staple in AEW since the company’s inception in 2019. However, the duo is now headed to WWE after both Penta and Fenix recently signed multi-year deals with the company. While this is a major shift, it seems Tony Khan had the option to extend Rey Fenix’s AEW contract to prevent the move but chose not to exercise it.
The Lucha Brothers’ AEW contracts were set to expire between August and September 2024, leaving them open to free agency. WWE was quick to show interest, and now the brothers are officially making their way to the rival promotion.
According to Ibou of WrestlePurists, Tony Khan had the legal right to add injury time to Rey Fenix’s contract, a move that would have kept him in AEW longer. Despite having this option, Khan decided against it, respecting Fenix’s loyalty and professionalism during his time in AEW. Fenix was known for his dedication, volunteering to work during the pandemic at Daily’s Place when it was optional, and never asking for a release from the company. His positive backstage presence was a factor in Khan’s ultimate decision.
“Tony Khan elected to not extend Rey Fenix’s contract with injury time, despite reserving the right to legally do so. Rey Fenix busted his ass for AEW, never caused issues behind the scenes, and was a day 1 guy,” Ibou explained.
Khan considered adding time to Fenix’s deal and was initially frustrated with the situation, but ultimately chose to let him leave on good terms.
Now that Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix are heading to WWE, fans are eager to see how the company will utilize the Lucha Brothers. Tony Khan’s decision not to add time to Fenix’s contract has earned him respect among fans for his professionalism.
