WWE paired up John Bradshaw Layfield and Baron Corbin on television back in 2022, with JBL stepping into the role of mentor, aiming to elevate Corbin to new heights. While the pairing showed promise and Corbin saw some initial success under JBL’s guidance, the partnership abruptly fizzled out by early February 2023, leaving fans wondering what went wrong.
During a recent appearance on Huge Pop, JBL opened up about his time working with Corbin and reflected on what may have led to the duo’s premature split.
“I don’t know what happened, and I don’t know what the plan was. They never told me,” JBL admitted. “I remember coming into Oklahoma one time, and me cutting a promo on Oklahoma, that’s pretty easy being from Texas. I cut promos every day just for fun on Oklahoma. After that, they said, ‘Next week.’ ‘What’s next week?’ Then they started bringing me back. I never really knew if it was a long-term plan or what was planned.”
Despite the potential of the pairing, JBL acknowledged that things simply didn’t click as expected. He was quick to take responsibility for the situation, praising Corbin in the process.
“It didn’t work. If it didn’t, blame me. I’m the veteran. Baron is a good, talented guy. Very tough guy. Very smart guy. I like Baron. If it didn’t work, blame me. I’m the one that obviously dropped the ball,” JBL said.
Since parting ways with Corbin, JBL has been making appearances across various wrestling promotions, lending his expertise to rising talents like Nic Nemeth, Mance Warner, Brock Anderson, and CW Anderson.
While the brief run between JBL and Corbin didn’t pan out as hoped, both have continued to move forward in their respective careers.
