Nigel McGuinness, once one of ROH’s top stars and a former ROH World Champion, recently clarified the reasons behind his retirement from in-ring competition in 2011. Known for his hard-hitting style and memorable run in both ROH and TNA, McGuinness stepped away from wrestling due to circumstances many fans have misunderstood. Now preparing for his upcoming match against Bryan Danielson at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, McGuinness addressed the real reason for his retirement and his return to the ring.
During an interview with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, McGuinness opened up about his history with injuries and how they affected his mindset during his preparation for his return. Contrary to popular belief, McGuinness explained that concussions and other injuries weren’t the reason for his decision to retire. Instead, it was a financial issue.
“There is a lot of confusion and misinformation. The truth of the matter is when I stepped away from wrestling, it was purely because I couldn’t make a living as a wrestler anymore. I could have gone back to Ring of Honor and wrestled that style, but I wouldn’t have made enough money to even afford health insurance, let alone save for the rest of my life,” McGuinness revealed.
He also explained that WWE passed on him due to an old arm injury, and he had no interest in returning to TNA after his previous experience there.
McGuinness also spoke about his hope that his retirement documentary, The Last of McGuinness, would allow him to share his story and potentially reignite interest in his wrestling career. “I didn’t step away because of concussions. I didn’t step away because of hepatitis. I was perfectly okay to wrestle,” McGuinness emphasized.
Now back in action, McGuinness is gearing up for his high-profile match against Bryan Danielson at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam. His return to the ring has sparked excitement, as fans are eager to see the former ROH standout take on one of his most famous rivals once again.
With McGuinness setting the record straight, the spotlight is now on his in-ring comeback. How will the former ROH World Champion fare against Bryan Danielson in what promises to be a monumental clash at Grand Slam?
