John Cena carried WWE on his back for over a decade and is now more focused on his flourishing career in Hollywood. In fact, The Leader of Cenation is set to star in a ‘Matchbox’ movie based on classic car toys.
John Cena has impressed fans with his talent and charm, moving from wrestling to acting. He has starred in movies like The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Fast & Furious, showing how skilled he is as an entertainer and gaining attention outside of WWE.
According to Deadline, Apple Original Films has secured Matchbox, a new live-action film from Skydance and Mattel Films, which will be directed by Sam Hargrave and will star John Cena. The movie is based on Mattel’s famous die-cast toy car line and will be written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper.
The Matchbox brand was created in 1953 by Jack Odell, an automotive enthusiast, for his daughter, who could only bring toys to school that fit inside a matchbox. The popularity of these cars has lasted over 70 years, with two Matchbox cars sold every second globally.
The film will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner. This project adds to Cena’s growing list of major roles, including his recent appearance in Jackpot and Ricky Stanicky. He will also reprise his role in the Peacemaker series and begin his WWE farewell tour in 2025, so we’ll have to see how Matchbox will fare once releases in the future.
