Cody Rhodes won the biggest match of his career at WWE WrestleMania 40 Sunday by dethroning Roman Reigns as the Undisputed WWE Champion. With that said, it appears Cody Rhodes remaining the champion for a year is not a lock.

The last time fans saw The Rock was during a previous episode of RAW, where he had a promo segment with Cody Rhodes, where The Rock sent an ominous message to The American Nightmare. The Rock also vowed that he would pursue Cody Rhodes for the rest of his life.

During his feud with Cody Rhodes, The Rock ended up getting The People’s Title during the WWE Hall of Fame this year. The Rock carried this title throughout the remainder of his WWE run, especially at WrestleMania 40. Rhodes has also successfully defended his title for several months at this point but fans wonder how long he will remain the champion.

While speaking during Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reports that the plan involving The Rock and Cody Rhodes included a contingency if Cody’s one-year run wasn’t guaranteed.

The introduction of the People’s Title was part of this backup plan, allowing WWE to pivot to an alternative if Cody’s run didn’t extend as planned. Therefore, there is no guarantee that Cody Rhodes will even be the champion heading into WrestleMania 41 and could lose it before that.

“One of the deals with Rock and Cody, a year ago, was if Cody – it was not a lock that Cody would have a one-year run. He could but one of the things I was pretty much told is the reason for the People’s Title was a back up for Cody not to go a year. So, they could go with something else.”

The Rock is expected to wrestle another match in 2024 before WrestleMania 41 as well and The Rock also vowed that he would pursue Cody Rhodes for the rest of his life. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see how WWE will book Rhodes and The Rock’s feud once it officially begins.
