Rob Van Dam is a WWE Hall of Famer known for his unconventional perspectives, and he’s not turning down the idea of having one last run. He recently sparked an interesting conversation about the acting in WWE films. The company’s film division is no longer making movies, but there was a time when they shoved a few direct to video projects out in quick order, and that sparked an interesting comparison.

On his 1 Of A Kind With RVD podcast, Rob Van Dam responded to a fan’s question on YouTube, asking why WWE movies often resembled low-budget porn in terms of acting quality. As expected from RVD, his answer was unique and thought-provoking.

The fan’s question, “Why did WWE movies look like low-budget porn acting?” was met with both humor and a surprisingly insightful comparison from Van Dam. He didn’t just dismiss the query, in fact, he used it to explore a broader point about entertainment in general, especially wrestling.

“Alright, you ready for this? Wrestling is porn,” Van Dam began, immediately grabbing attention. But his explanation wasn’t meant to be provocative for the sake of it—it was a metaphorical deep dive into the nature of performance in both wrestling and adult films. He explained that both wrestling and porn serve as forms of escapism, designed to make audiences suspend their disbelief and invest emotionally in the performance.

“In both wrestling and porn, you’re watching something to escape reality. The more you believe what they’re doing, the more you invest your emotions. If they mess up, it ruins the whole fantasy, the whole feel of it. All of a sudden, you realize, ‘Oh, they’re just working together.’ That can take you out of the experience.”

Rob Van Dam continued, comparing the moments in wrestling where performers wait outside the ring to catch a dive to a director giving obvious cues during a porn scene. In both cases, the illusion of spontaneity is shattered, and the viewer is reminded they’re watching a staged performance. “When wrestlers just stand there waiting to catch someone, it’s like the director saying, ‘Scream a little louder, honey,’” Van Dam quipped.

The Whole F’n Show’s point emphasized that the art of wrestling, like acting in any genre, relies on believability and seamless performance. The audience is supposed to get lost in the action, and when something looks overly staged, it breaks that illusion. Much like in porn or movies, when the “magic” of the performance is lost, the viewer is jolted back into reality, which defeats the purpose of the entertainment.

While the fan’s question about WWE films and their “low-budget porn acting” was meant to poke fun, Rob Van Dam used it as an opportunity to remind us of the importance of performance in wrestling—and how easily the magic can be broken if the execution falls short.
