The September 13 WWE SmackDown, held at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, WA, had several big moments, including pro wrestler Ricky Gibson becoming an overnight sensation. It has now been revealed who in WWE reached out to Ricky for his SmackDown appearance.

Independent wrestler Ricky Gibson, known for his work with Midnight Heat, created a ton of hype with fans after nearly teaming up with Kevin Owens on the September 13 SmackDown. Gibson, who was introduced simply as ‘Ricky,’ was initially set to team with Owens against A-Town Down Under. However, Owens’ preferred partner, Randy Orton, was available and ultimately replaced Gibson.

While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Gibson revealed that he had been contacted by Gabe Sapolsky to work as an extra for WWE’s Seattle and Portland shows. He took the opportunity to attend SmackDown, hoping for a chance to get noticed.

“Gabe Sapolsky reached out a couple weeks ago and said SmackDown and Raw were going to be in Seattle and Portland, it would be great if you could make it to Seattle for extra work.

“I just showed up. Like everyone does, you put on a suit, you go to catering, and you hope for the best.”

“The difference was, I was walking around the hallways, and there is Kevin Owens walking around. He’s walking around like he has no clue what he’s doing. I go, ‘Hey, what can do for you? Can I help you?’ It was perfect. I’m a tag team guy. When he was like, ‘I need a tag team partner.’ It was easy for me to step up and be like, ‘I’m your guy.’

“I saw him ask Booker (Booker T) and RVD (Rob Van Dam). I saw him ask a ton of different guys. Everyone is saying no. I’m your guy. Who else?”

Kevin Owens also issued a statement after Ricky went viral. Ricky’s overnight popularity simply goes to show how anyone can get over in the world of professional wrestling under the most random circumstances. We’ll have to see if Ricky will make more appearances on WWE television eventually.
