WWE brought a big season premiere on the USA Network for the September 13 SmackDown. Although a lot of things went down during that two-hour show, many fans were talking about Ricky Gibson after it was all over, because #JusticeForRicky trended for a while after the blue brand brought their show in Seattle, Washington.
On the September 13 episode of WWE SmackDown, Kevin Owens found himself in need of a tag team partner to face Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. While fans ultimately saw Randy Orton as his partner, Owens had a couple of surprising names on his list before the “Viper” arrived.
In a digital exclusive, Kevin Owens revealed that his first choice wasn’t Randy Orton, nor was it Ricky from Seattle, who ended up teaming with him briefly. Owens had actually hoped to team with some WWE Legends who were in attendance. One of those legends was none other than Booker T, but Booker declined due to lingering resentment from the time Owens insulted Texas to provoke Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Next on Owens’ wish list was Rob Van Dam. However, when Owens asked Van Dam to team up, the response was cryptic. Van Dam told him he was “on another planet.” Owens admitted he wasn’t sure what that meant, but Randy Orton quickly clarified, saying the “other planet” Van Dam was on was actually “Planet Randy” and located on Orton’s tour bus.
After these attempts to secure a legend as his partner fell through, Owens ultimately teamed up with Ricky from Seattle, the only man tough enough to agree to face Theory and Waller. Following the match, Orton extended an invitation to Owens and Ricky to join him on his bus, where Rob Van Dam was presumably still enjoying his time on “Planet Randy.”
“Then I asked RVD and he said that he’s on another planet, and I didn’t know what he meant, because he was standing right in front of me! Then Ricky overheard and he stepped up, because that’s who Ricky is. He’s the only one who is man enough.“
Owens’ humorous recount of his quest for a tag team partner shows just how unpredictable the world of WWE can be, with even legends turning down the chance to share the ring with the “Prize Fighter,” except for Randy Orton, of course. It should be noted that Kevin Owens has made a statement toward Ricky, one where he was unapologetic, but still thankful.
RVD was on SmackDown this week, but he was in the crowd like other legends. The WWE Hall of Famer was seated beside Katie Forbes for the big show, and it appears that they were having a wonderful time. Sadly, RVD didn’t get to mix it up in the ring, but he’s not retired by a long shot.
