The world of professional wrestling is often defined by record-breaking achievements, and one Ring of Honor star has quietly set an impressive new standard. Athena, the current ROH Women’s World Champion, has officially become the longest reigning champion in the promotion’s history, surpassing a major milestone while continuing to dominate her division.
As of September 15th, Athena surpassed 646 days as the ROH Women’s World Champion, breaking Samoa Joe’s long-standing record of 645 days as the ROH World Champion. This historic feat makes Athena the longest reigning Ring of Honor champion of all time, a title previously held by Samoa Joe since 2004.
Athena captured the ROH Women’s World Championship on December 10th, 2022, at Ring of Honor Final Battle when she defeated Mercedes Martinez. Since then, she has successfully defended the title 22 times, taking on top competitors like Queen Aminata, Willow Nightingale, Billie Starkz, Hikaru Shida, and more. Her reign has been marked by consistent dominance, showcasing her skills against a diverse array of challengers.
Samoa Joe’s previous record-setting reign spanned from March 22nd, 2003, to December 26th, 2004, when he was finally dethroned by Austin Aries at Ring of Honor Final Battle 2004. For nearly two decades, that reign stood as the longest in ROH history until Athena’s incredible journey shattered it.
Athena last defended her championship on July 27th at Ring of Honor Death Before Dishonor, where she successfully retained her title by defeating Queen Aminata. She is now set to defend her title once again at Maple Leaf Pro Forged In Excellence against Gisele Shaw, continuing her legendary run.
Athena’s record-breaking reign further solidifies her place as one of the most dominant figures in Ring of Honor history, and her ongoing title defenses prove she has no intention of slowing down. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how long this remarkable reign will last.
We will keep our eye on this story and so many more for updates. You never know who will break a record next, but this is certainly a very nice achievement for Athena.
