Kevin Owens is no stranger to going viral, but one unexpected moment from the September 13 episode of WWE SmackDown in Seattle, Washington’s Climate Pledge Arena took off more than he likely anticipated. Now Kevin Owens has released a brief statement on his viral segment.
During the September 13 WWE SmackDown, Owens briefly introduced a mystery partner named Ricky to join him in the ring. However, Ricky’s role was short-lived, as WWE legend Randy Orton soon arrived, taking his place and leaving Ricky on the receiving end of a Stunner from Owens.
The incident quickly caught the attention of fans, with “#JusticeForRicky” trending on social media as supporters rallied behind Ricky Gibson, the mystery man who was soon identified. Fans began calling for Ricky to receive his due after being unceremoniously ousted from the match. Owens, ever the entertainer, responded to the viral moment with a playful apology to Ricky on social media, but showed little remorse for his actions.
Ricky wasn’t his original choice for Owens’ partner. Randy Orton was always planned to join him, but due to travel uncertainties, Owens wasn’t sure Orton would make it. Once Orton arrived, Ricky’s services were no longer needed, leading to Owens’ comedic Stunner and the viral moment that followed.
To add even more salt in the wound, Kevin Owens tweeted out to thank Ricky for his services. He also made it very clear that he’s not sorry.
“Thank you (and sorry!) @rockinrickyg”
Though Ricky may not have gotten his moment in the spotlight, the “#JusticeForRicky” movement has sparked interest across the wrestling community. Whether WWE capitalizes on the viral buzz remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Kevin Owens has once again found a way to keep fans talking.
We will keep a close eye on this story for more updates. WWE fans have their way of influencing booking, so only time will tell if this viral groundswell will get Ricky Gibson a few more gigs with WWE. After all, James Ellsworth made an entire WWE career out of a similar appearance that went viral.
