You never know who might show up on NXT these days, and The Bloodline made that abundantly clear this week. While Solo Sikoa wasn’t present, the rest of the faction stormed in and decimated everyone involved in the tag team title match. WWE clearly has a plan in place for these surprises.
Right before what would have been the biggest match of his career on the September 10 NXT show, Trey Miguel had to undergo unforeseen minor surgery just two days earlier. Miguel and Zachary Wentz were initially set to challenge Axiom and Nathan Frazer for the NXT Tag Team Titles, but The Street Profits replaced them. However, the match didn’t end with a clean finish as Tama Tonga, Loa, and Fatu ambushed both teams. WWE didn’t want The Street Profits to take a loss, nor did they plan to change the titles, leading to a non-finish.
According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision to involve The Bloodline was made as soon as The Street Profits were added to the match. There had already been discussions about having the trio appear on NXT, even before Miguel and Wentz were pulled, but the plan wasn’t finalized until they needed a way to resolve the match. WWE wants to create the impression for CW viewers that any main roster star could show up, whether announced or unannounced.
“They didn’t want the Street Profits losing and weren’t going to change the titles, so that meant a non-finish. The decision to have the three be involved in the finish was made when the decision was made to put the Street Profits in the match.”
It was also noted that another change with the move to CW on October 1 is that NXT must end by 9:59 p.m. sharp, due to many CW stations having news at 10 p.m., meaning no more overruns. We will have to see what else they alter when moving the black and gold brand to their new television home.
The Bloodline certainly sent a message with their invasion. While The Street Profits didn’t claim the NXT Tag Team Titles, they might be in line for a run on the main roster. However, they’ll have to contend with the ever-aggressive Bloodline if they want to achieve that goal.
