On the September 9th episode of Monday Night RAW, Bret “The Hitman” Hart made a special appearance in his hometown of Calgary, Alberta, at the Saddledome. However, it appears WWE had different plans for the segment than what was shown.

During the show, Bret Hart participated in a segment with Sami Zayn and World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER. In the segment, GUNTHER took a swipe at Bret by stating that his favorite wrestler was Goldberg, a long-time rival of Hart’s. This comment elicited a strong reaction from the audience.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that the original plan for Bret Hart’s segment on RAW was for Drew McIntyre to confront him. Meltzer noted that this made more sense because CM Punk, a big fan of Bret Hart, would have been involved.

Meltzer mentioned that GUNTHER might not have been seen as a strong match for Hart, raising questions about why the plan changed. Meltzer also said that if Tony Khan had booked the segment, he would have likely set up a confrontation where Martha Hart faced someone Punk dislikes, which would make for exciting TV.

“It was originally scheduled to be Drew confronting Bret, which would’ve made more sense given that Punk is a huge Bret guy. Gunther isn’t that good enough to be standing in the same ring as him, so I don’t know why the decision changed.
Tony (Khan) would’ve 100% booked Martha (Hart) to get jumped by a man Punk despises, because that’s just good TV.”

Bret Hart also called his interactions with Triple H a pleasure despite their tense history. Nonetheless, fans were happy to see the WWE Hall of Famer back on television after so long and that’s all that matters.
