Nigel McGuinness is set to return to singles competition for the first time since 2011 in a highly anticipated AEW match against Bryan Danielson. The bout will take place on the Grand Slam edition of AEW Dynamite in New York on September 25, 2024, only if Danielson is cleared to compete.
The announcement was made on the September 11 episode of AEW Dynamite, with the added condition that Danielson would need medical clearance to compete. McGuinness previously made his in-ring return during AEW All In London on August 25, participating in the World Championship Number 1 Contendership Casino Gauntlet, but this upcoming contest marks his first singles match in over a decade, since December 17, 2011.
Despite his extended absence from wrestling, McGuinness has expressed confidence in his ability, stating that he feels physically prepared and that his “tank is still at full” for his in-ring return.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the matchup between McGuinness and Danielson was not part of a long-term plan but came together more spontaneously. This match promises to be a major moment for both wrestlers, reigniting old rivalries and showcasing McGuinness’ long-awaited return to singles action.
“From what I understand the whole McGuinness thing was not like something long planned out. It was something that kind of got thrown together.”
We will have to wait and see whether the match will end up surpassing all expectations as fans have been waiting to see The American Dragon and Nigel McGuinness have one last match for a long time now.
