At WWE WrestleMania 40 Sunday, Cody Rhodes won the biggest match of his career by dethroning Roman Reigns as the Undisputed WWE Champion. With that said, Rhodes’ title run has now been criticized for being underwhelming.

Since becoming the champion, Cody Rhodes has defended his title against the likes of Logan Paul, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens and Solo Sikoa. Fans are enjoying his run so far but some also feel his title run hasn’t gone the way they wanted it to.

While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray shared his thoughts on why Cody Rhodes’ current run as WWE Champion feels a bit lacking. According to Bully, Rhodes hasn’t faced a “mega heel” who could truly challenge him, using The Rock as an example of the kind of opponent Cody needs. Bully noted that while Cody has had some strong challengers, none of them have posed the kind of threat that The Rock did in past rivalries, which has made Cody’s reign feel less impactful.

“He hasn’t had a heel like The Rock. Now I know we’re asking a lot, it’s difficult to come out of an angle that main-evented WrestleMania with a guy portraying the heel like The Rock was, and then find somebody who could be at the same level as The Rock. So you’re dealing with challengers who are heels but nobody who’s posing the threat that The Rock did … so underwhelming because I don’t think we’ve had the right mega heel.”

Bully went on to praise Rhodes for his connection with fans, particularly his efforts outside the ring, where he’s built strong relationships with the WWE Universe. However, he feels Cody’s title reign over the past six months has been underwhelming due to the absence of a “super heel” to really elevate the storylines.

Despite all the great things Cody does—like engaging with fans on social media and making appearances at events—Bully believes the reign would feel more complete if Rhodes had a bigger villain to go up against.

“I love Cody doing the old school way, I love that Cody has the kids in his back pocket, I love that Cody goes above and beyond the call of duty for just about every fan that he meets, I love that Cody answers people on social media, I love that Cody shows up at people’s weddings … I love all that, but if I have to be honest and fair about an assessment about something, it’s a bit underwhelming … I think it’s underwhelming because of the lack of super heels.”

The American Nightmare is set to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Solo Sikoa on the September 13th edition of Friday Night SmackDown in steel cage match, so we will have to wait and see how the match will turn out as many fans also feel he needs better opponents.
