Bryan Danielson successfully defended the AEW World Title at All Out, but his night ended dramatically as he was left suffocated. While he won’t defend his championship at Grand Slam on September 25, his match for the event was set during the September 11 edition of AEW Dynamite.
The second-to-last segment of the night opened with Nigel McGuinness in the ring. McGuinness, who returned to action during All Out as an entrant in the Casino Gauntlet match, seems to be stepping back into the ring, despite continuing his commentary duties on Collision.
Nigel mentioned that Darby Allin will face Jon Moxley at Grand Slam, with Allin’s future AEW World Title shot on the line. He then added that a champion should compete at such a major event and pulled out a contract.
Despite concerns about booking the match, Tony Khan approved it, and it was officially announced that Bryan Danielson will take on Nigel McGuinness at AEW Grand Slam. Although no mention was made of the match being for the title, the announcement drew a huge reaction from the Lexington, Kentucky crowd.
This announcement brought a “Holy Sh*t” chant from the crown. Nigel also promised that “Oasis will play me to the ring, or will Bryan Danielson join me for the final countdown?” He then called Danielson a coward and ended the segment.
AEW Grand Slam is shaping up to be a major event on September 25, with two big matches already confirmed. It’s set to be an exciting night for the company.
