CM Punk has been involved in his fair share of controversy throughout his career. The AJ Lee and Larry bracelet became the focal point of the feud between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre in the lead-up to WWE SummerSlam and WWE Bash In Berlin. McIntyre stole the bracelet before SummerSlam and held onto it until Punk reclaimed it at Bash In Berlin.
On the September 2nd episode of WWE Raw, McIntyre broke the bracelet, sending Punk to the hospital. The shocking moment resonated with many, including the fan who originally made the bracelet for Punk.
On September 9th, WWE Shop began selling the bracelet for $9.99. Victoria, the fan who made the bracelet, tweeted that a “notice would have been nice.” She followed up by saying, “It was just supposed to be a gift for Punk, not the whole world,” accompanied by a crying emoji. WWE has since removed the bracelet from their store.
Victoria released a statement addressing the situation, expressing her thoughts about not being informed that WWE would be selling the bracelet. She shared a series of five tweets to explain her feelings.
“Hi everyone – thanks again for all the nice words and support. I won’t be asking for compensation from WWE since they have every right to make bracelets. All I kind of was hoping for was maybe a mention in the description of the product.”
“Throughout this whole thing, I never expected to be given anything from WWE – all I wanted was for people to put a name/face to where the bracelet came from. I completely understand why some of you guys are upset at WWE, and it means a lot to me that people care so much.”
“For those replying to my initial post about me not getting a heads-up and saying WWE didn’t need to, I 100% agree they didn’t need to. Legally, they had no obligation to reach out to me regarding this, but it just would have been nice to have heard it from them beforehand.”
“If they reached out to me about it, I would have mentioned putting ‘CM Punk’ on the bracelets instead of ‘AJ’ and ‘Larry’ (I think more people would have been interested in that) since now it kind of diminishes the whole storyline purpose of the bracelet.”
“WWE did reach out to me last week as a thank you from Punk and invited me to a show next month, but to my knowledge, that invitation had no correlation to them selling bracelets and wasn’t offered as compensation. But I am still grateful for them contacting me at all.”
CM Punk and Drew McIntyre are scheduled to clash at Hell in a Cell on October 5. Although the bracelet is no longer part of the storyline after its destruction, it remains to be seen just how intense the match will get. Update: The Bracelet is back up on the WWE Shop, but it’s been changed.
We’ll continue to monitor this story for any updates. WWE is a massive organization with a huge revenue stream from merchandise, and Victoria’s contribution to the storyline was a thoughtful one. While she’s not asking for compensation, her involvement left an impact on the storyline, and only time will tell if she gets further recognition.
