Sami Zayn’s tenure as WWE Intercontinental Champion came to an end at WWE SummerSlam when he lost the title to Bron Breakker but he is now feuding with GUNTHER. Following the events of RAW this week, Zayn made it clear he wants to honor Bret Hart’s legacy.
Sami Zayn appeared on the September 9th episode of WWE Raw, wearing a Johnny Gaudreau Calgary Flames jersey to honor Gaudreau, who tragically lost his life alongside his brother Matthew in an accident caused by an alleged drunk driver.
During the show, Zayn shared the ring with WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart after World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER interrupted the legend. Zayn challenged GUNTHER to a match, but GUNTHER declined.
While speaking on WWE Raw Talk, Zayn opened up about the emotional significance of the night. He mentioned that wearing the jersey wasn’t due to being a Flames fan but to pay tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. Zayn reflected on the loss and how it made him contemplate the importance of time.
Sharing the ring with Bret Hart, his childhood hero, in Calgary felt deeply meaningful to him. Hearing Hart speak about the honor of being a champion, especially a Canadian champion, inspired Zayn to aim for the World Heavyweight Championship. Zayn declared that he’s coming for Gunther’s title, feeling the champion’s reign is nearing its end, and expressed his desire to carry on the legacy of champions like Hart.
“You actually caught me at a really strange time because I’m feeling really emotional, to be honest. I’m wearing this jersey, not because I’m a Flames fan, everyone knows I’m a Canadiens guy, but to honor Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically passed away. I don’t know, it just makes you think about the time you have here and what you do with it, and to be able to share the ring with [Bret Hart], he was my hero growing up. To share the ring with him in Calgary, the significance, it’s not lost on me. So I’m in a really strange kind of head space. But listening to him talk also kind of lit a fire under me. To hear him talk about what it meant to be a champion, and a Canadian champion. Listening to him, I realized, man, we haven’t had that in a long time, and I want it to be me. I want it to be me. I want to honor his legacy. I want to honor the template that he laid out for guys like me. So GUNTHER’s got something that, as far as I’m concerned, it’s on borrowed time because I’m coming. I’m coming for the World Heavyweight Championship.”
We will have to wait and see whether Sami Zayn will be able to defeat GUNTHER and end up becoming the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and honor Bret Hart’s legacy, as that is certainly Zayn’s goal right now.
