MVP’s contract with WWE expired on August 16, 2024, marking the end of his second tenure with the promotion. Following this, his profile on WWE’s website was moved to the alumni section, officially signaling his departure from the company.

Shortly after leaving WWE, MVP returned to the independent wrestling scene, making his debut for Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XI on July 28, 2024. During this appearance, MVP announced that he would be leaving WWE and directly confronted Josh Barnett, challenging him to a match. This return to the indie circuit also highlighted MVP’s storied career outside WWE, including his significant time spent in TNA Wrestling, now IMPACT Wrestling, where he had notable runs from 2014 to 2015, and again in 2019.

During a virtual signing with K&S WrestleFest, MVP confirmed that he was originally slated to win the IMPACT/TNA World Championship during his time with the company. However, a knee injury he sustained at an independent show just before he was scheduled to win the title changed the plans. As a result, Bobby Lashley was brought in as his surprise stand-in, leading to Lashley’s championship win.

“I was supposed to be the IMPACT Heavyweight Champion, and I hurt my knee at an independent show the weekend before I was supposed to win it,” MVP explained. “We had a discussion about bringing in Bobby Lashley as my surprise stand-in, and that was the beginning of that whole thing. So, we did the angle where I would say it was our championship. Because I was supposed to get it, but Bobby did it for me, therefore it made it our championship… Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, Lashley agreed with me on that. He was cool with it. It was our championship.”

Only time will tell if MVP ever gets another run in TNA Wrestling. As a free agent, that could happen. He also doesn’t plan on retiring yet, but he knows it is coming. That being said, his retirement will stick whenever that day does come around.

MVP has also taken the time in recent memory to address the story that he called Triple H racist. That never happened, as he denied it. Just because Triple H didn’t book MVP like Vince McMahon did had no bearing to make that assumption.

We will have to see what MVP does next. It’s hard to argue that he hasn’t deserved a WWE Hall of Fame induction someday as well. Until then, we’ll keep a close eye on his activities.
