The Aerial Assassin, Will Ospreay, recently reflected on his memorable 2017 match with WWE star Drew McIntyre during the WCPW Exit Wounds event. In this encounter, Ospreay challenged McIntyre for the WCPW World Championship. Though McIntyre ultimately secured the victory, Ospreay fondly recalls their time together in the ring.
In a recent interview with Inside the Ropes, Will Ospreay expressed his admiration for working with McIntyre despite never keeping contact with him, always keeping an eye on his work. He further mentioned that he would be eager to face McIntyre again, emphasizing the strong connection they built during the match.
“I remember it super fondly. I have nothing but love for Drew and I hope he’s doing well. I haven’t kept in contact with him but I keep up with his work, and hope the same is mutual. If there was ever a chance to throw down I’d happily do it again. I think it was different as well because I had to work as a bad guy.”
Ospreay also highlighted the unique challenge of working as a heel in that bout, explaining how it differed from his typical face work, especially when incorporating his aerial offence.
“I had to really dictate the pace of that match so that when I did explode in my aerial offense, it was more out of desperation rather than to get a pop from the audience.”
McIntyre, after being released from WWE in 2014, returned to the independent scene, wrestling under his Drew Galloway moniker in promotions such as ICW, Evolve, and WCPW before his 2017 return to WWE. Ospreay, meanwhile, signed with AEW in 2023 after talks with WWE and a stellar run in NJPW.
While Will Ospreay recently won back the AEW International Championship from MJF at All In, McIntyre is coming off a huge loss at the hands of CM Punk in a Strap match at the WWE Bash in Berlin.
Once again, we will have to wait and see if that can happen in the future if Ospreay is open to throwing hands with McIntyre. But as far as this match is concerned, it marked a pivotal moment in both wrestlers’ careers, showcasing their diverse styles and storytelling capabilities.
