Popular wrestling star and commentator Nigel McGuinness returned triumphantly to the ring at AEW All In 2024, marking his first match since retiring in 2011 due to health issues. After 13 years away from in-ring competition, McGuinness participated in the Casino Gauntlet, a momentous occasion that reignited his wrestling aspirations.
Originally, Nigel had plans to wrestle current AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson at AEW All In 2023, but those plans were derailed when Danielson suffered an arm injury. Despite this setback, McGuinness was able to make his return this year and has since expressed a desire for more matches in the future.
In an interview with Raj Prashad of Uproxx Sports, McGuinness highlighted Bryan Danielson as his top choice for a future match due to their deep history and the emotional stakes involved. He also mentioned Zack Sabre Jr. and Adam Copeland as other potential dream opponents. Moreover, McGuinness also credited training with Lee Moriarty before AEW Collision shows, which helped him prepare for returning to in-ring action.
“Bryan’s certainly head of line because of our history, there’s so much emotion tied up in a match with him. Zack Sabre Jr. would be a dream match. Adam Copeland, he’s got another of those ‘broken bones.’ There are so many great talents, Lee Moriarty has been gracious enough to get in the ring with me before the shows at Collision, and that’s helped me a great deal.”
However, Nigel McGuinness is selective about his future in-ring appearances. He has no desire to wrestle every week and is content with the idea that his match at Wembley Stadium in front of 50,000 fans could be his last.
While Nigel McGuinness continues to serve as a commentator on AEW Collision alongside Tony Schiavone, we will have to wait and see if he will compete in some more matches for AEW moving forward.
